Hunchback writer …

I read somewhere that you shouldn’t sit still for longer than three hours a day… what writer doesn’t sit still for at least that long once they’re in the zone? I know I do!

After one of my many long writing sessions the other day, I got up and my neck was totally killing me, my seat muscles were sore and my back was aching. Had I been sitting still for too long? Probably! My back has troubled me before and it has always had that annoying sway, but it hit me that all this writing can be a real pain for your body. I have no desire to end up with a hunchback by the time I turn 60 just because I didn’t take better care when I could.

Get up every half an hour or so and stretch. Move your hands around and take five minutes to relax. There are lots of important things to consider, which you can use when you write  to prevent your hands, neck and back from becoming a hinderance in your work. – How you sit, the hight of your chair and desk, a mat for your arm and hand, the placement of the keyboard; and more, is crucial for the best possible writing experience.

Do I follow all this advise myself? Hardly, but I try, and sometimes I’ll remember that I should take a moment to flex my wrists and straighten my back. Sometimes I’ll take a break and do push ups, and on some days I forget all about it ( and I end up having a miserable night because my body is yelling at me for having sat still for hours … )

I do run, walk and “hula hoop” every so often – probably not enough, but I do it. Also, when you break for exercise you might find that it gives you time to reflect on your work. It provides you with more energy (and less pain!) and your final product might actually be better for it.

A great writer is not defined or limited by the amount of words written, but by hard work, time, dedication and precision – which probably leaves however much you DID write a product you can be proud of.

    I work out hard about 5 days a week. I don’t like it, but there’s no arguing with the results!
